Early life

Segal attended Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando, Florida. While there, she competed on the school's debate team, placing fifth at the grand national tournament in Washington, DC.[1] She was a semifinalist in the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge[2] and in 2003 was elected treasurer of the Teen Arts Advisory Council for Orlando Mayor Glenda Hood.[3]
Segal also won first place at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in 2003[4] with her research analyzing the use of proteoglycans as a biomarker for congenital hydrocephalus.[5] Main-belt asteroid 17795 Elysiasegal was named for her in recognition of this achievement.[6]
She graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts after studying at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, the CAP21 Musical Theatre Conservatory, Stonestreet Studio's Film & TV Workshop, and at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. She is also a founding member of the Tisch East Alumni Council.

Segal has performed in a number of productions, most notably her portrayal of the feisty, lesbian performance artist "Maureen" in RENT. Other credits include The Legend of Flowers (Lincoln Center), George M. Cohan: In His Own Words (Lake Placid Center for the Arts), The Who's Tommy (DeBaun Center for Performing Arts), Emergency Contraception!: The Musical (Theater for the New City), and We Love You, Johnny Hero (DR2 Theatre).[7][8][9] She has also made a number of film and television appearances including The Music Never Stopped (Official Selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival),[10] Going the Distance, and Mercy.[11]
In April 2010, Segal starred as "Gillian" in a reading of Together This Time: A New Rock Musical by Andrew Heyman and Zac Kline at the TADA Theatre,[12] a project that she had been workshopping with the writers since its inception at NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program two years prior. She also appeared in the show's premiere later that summer at the Lucille Lortel Theater as part of the New York International Fringe Festival.[13][14] Other readings and workshops include The Yehuatl, Wilma & Carla, Hero Complex and I Am Jim Thompson.
Segal played "Beth II" in Y: The Last Man directed by Ryan O'Leary.[15] The fan film, adapted from the Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra graphic novels of the same name, premiered at the 2011 Litchfield Hills Film Festival[16] and received much publicity due to the popularity of the series. It also screened with a Q&A panel at I-CON 30 at Stony Brook University, the largest science fiction and fantasy convention in the Northeast.[17]

She was later recommended by O'Leary for the role of "Laura" in Louis Matta's time-travel film The Traveler, a role which earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 2011 FTC Luminaries. The film also went on to win Audience Favorite Sci-Fi Mini Short in the 2011 ShockerFest International Film Festival.[18]
Segal received a nomination for Outstanding Actress[19] in June 2011 for her performance as "Daisy Miller" in the world premiere reading of the play Pushing Daisy.[20][21] The largely autobiographical piece, written by playwright and cancer survivor Lauren Epsenhart, was performed at the Gene Frankel Theatre in New York City as part of the Planet Connections Theatre Festivity, and was the first to be produced by The Pushing Daisy Project, an organization founded by Epsenhart which promotes cancer awareness and charity through the showcasing of new and developing works.[22][23]
In September 2011, she co-starred with writer/director Terence Krey in the Producers Guild 48-hour short film contest entry After the Fact.[11] Krey then cast her as "Cassandra Southwick" in his web series pilot Entwined,[24] which went on to win "Best Use of Numerical Element" in Celebrate the Web 5, and again as "Chloe," the lead in his genre-blending indie-horror-romance feature Not A Monster.[25]
The couple collaborated yet again for Celebrate the Web 6 on the steampunk-inspired web series pilot "The Belle and The Bot," with Segal (also a producer on the project) playing Abigail, the time-traveling Southern belle from the year 1863, and Krey as her tragic robot husband, Edward.[26] The show won "Judge's Choice" and runner up for "Audience Choice" in the competition, and was screened during Industry Day at VidCon 2012.[27]
Segal is also co-producing and starred as Penelope in Krey's upcoming supernatural dramedy feature film, "Winter Slides," currently in post production
