Shergill was born in a Sikh Punjabi family in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. He moved to Punjab, the place of his ancestors, in 1985 where he studied in The Punjab Public School, Nabha and Bikram College, Punjabi University, Patiala.[2] He learnt acting from Sri Harpal Singh, and then moved to Mumbai to work in the entertainment industry. He's married to Priyanka Puri from Delhi[3] and they have a son named Veer Shergill.[4]

Film career

Hindi Films

Shergill started his acting career in 1996 with the critically acclaimed film Maachis directed by Gulzar based on terrorism in Punjab. The film did reasonably well at the box office and got him noticed by all the top filmmakers in the industry which led him to being cast in Aditya Chopra's Mohabbatein alongside stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Aishwarya Rai. He's consistently won rave reviews for all his performances in films like Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, Haasil, Munna Bhai, Yahaan, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Eklavya: The Royal Guard, A Wednesday, My Name is Khan, Tanu Weds Manu, Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster and Special 26.

Punjabi Films

He started acting in Punjabi Films in 2005 in movie Manmohan Singh's Yaaran Naal Baharan which did well on the box office and then he went on to act in several other Punjabi Films. He is currently one of the top actors in the industry, and some of the films he's acted in have been hits. He plans to produce and act in one Punjabi Film every year for which he's signed a deal with Bollywood production house Eros International. His first film as a producer Dharti released in 2011 and did well at the box office.[5] The next production from his company was Taur Mittran Di, that released in May 2012. He's lined up two more films for production the multi star cast Saadi Love Story in which he's cast Diljit Dosanjh, Amrinder Gill, Neeru Bajwa, Surveen Chawla and himself in a cameo and another film titled Rangeelay which casts him in the lead with Neha Dhupia.

One of the most versatile performers in India today, Jaaved Jaaferi is known for donning various hats with flamboyance: actor, dancer, singer, choreographer, VJ, MC, ad filmmaker among others. The son of India’s most popular and legendary Actor/comedian, Jagdeep, Jaaved carries on the tradition of humor with élan.
Debuting in Meri Jung in 1985, he made a huge impact in a negative role. His performance in the song "Bol Baby Bol Rock & Roll" incorporated a path-breaking style showcasing his dancing excellence. He garnered a huge fan-following inspiring the new generation of dancers. He has acted in over 35 films, both Indian and international, till date, winning awards from SCREEN and IIFA.
The launch of Channel V and its irreverent sense of humor gave Jaaved a platform to demonstrate his unique brand of comedy on television in the 1990s. Incorporating puns, impersonations, characters, accents, and introducing the now-ubiquitous Hinglish, he anchored the two cult shows Videocon Flashback and Timex Timepass. Jaaved co-founded and judged India’s first dance reality show Boogie Woogie which has broken records and is the longest running dance show, covering 15 years. His performance in the song "Mumbhai," from the film, Bombay Boys, which was conceived, written, choreographed by him, gained a cult status among the young dancers and was number 1 on the charts for 6 weeks.
He dubbed Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Don Carnage in Hindi for Disney; scripted the Hindi version of Disney’s Jungle Book 2 and Pixar’s The Incredibles along with voicing for the antagonist. His character as Charlie Anna in the first full-fledged commercial animated film Roadside Romeo (a collaborative effort of YashRaj films and Disney) was highly appreciated. His commentary on the famous Japanese TV show Takeshi's Castle on Pogo TV has also garnered a huge fan following with kids and adults.
Has repeatedly hosted top award shows like Filmfare, SCREEN and IIFA. Furthermore, he has performed in over 200 live shows in India and abroad, and shared the stage with Michael Jackson, Sting, Spice Girls and Queen and the top Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, A. Film background

The film Meri Jung, released in 1985, gave him his first opportunity to enact the role of a villain and showcase his dancing powers on screen. Television in the 1990s highlighted his comical abilities, extending his popularity further. The launch of cable TV, particularly Channel [V] and its irreverent sense of humour, gave him a niche to depict his unique brand of comedy.
He anchored the show Videocon Flashback with distinctive brilliance. His deadpan expressions and bilingual puns gave him a formidable fan following.
Another notable contribution by Jaffrey is his performance as an anchor to the top-of-the-charts song programme, Timex Timepass, in which he shifted between the caricatures of characters.
He won his first IIFA Award for best comic role in Salaam Namaste in 2006. He hosts the dance competition show Boogie Woogie on Sony Entertainment Television Asia with his brother Naved Jaffery and friend Ravi Behl. He recently started hosting a game show called Mai Ka Laal on Disney Channel India which airs on Sundays at 5pm.

Jackie Shroff (born Jaikishen Kakubhai Shroff on 1 February 1960)[1][2] is an Indian actor. He has been in the Gujarati cinema and Hindi cinema (Bollywood) industries for almost 3 decades and has appeared in over 150 films in eight languages (Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil and Punjabi).
Shroff was born on 11 February 1960 as Jai Kishen Shroff into a Gujarati family to Kakubhai & Rita Shroff.[1] They lived in a low income chawl in the Teen Batti area at Walkeshwar, Mumbai. Before entering the film industry, Shroff was a local toughie. He also modelled in a few advertisements. It was director/producer Subhash Ghai who gave Shroff his screen name "Jackie" when he launched him in the film "Hero".
In the late 80s, Jackie Shroff married his longtime girlfriend, Ayesha Dutt, who later turned film producer. The couple run a media company, Jackie Shroff Entertainment Limited. They jointly owned 10% shares in Sony TV since its launch and in 2012 decided to sell their stake and end their 15-year-long association with Sony TV. The Shroffs have two children: a son, Tiger (Jai Hemanta), and a daughter, Krishna.
Since the late 90s, Shroff seems to have moved away from lead roles in Hindi movies and has been seen more often in strong character roles.

Career

Shroff made his acting debut in Dev Anand's [3] movie, Swami Dada.
In 1983, he appeared as the main lead actor in Subhash Ghai movie "Hero" in which he was paired with Meenakshi Sheshadri and worked with eminent senior co-stars such as Shammi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar and Amrish Puri. The film was declared "Super Hit" on the Indian Box Office. Both Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri became huge stars after the release of the film. Shroff suddenly came in demand after the film's release and thus began a long association with Subhash Ghai. Till today he is fondly referred as "Jackie Dada", his character's name in the movie "Hero".
Since then Shroff went on to star in close to 150 movies. He and Anil Kapoor have co-acted in several superhit movies such as Yudh, Andar Baahar, Karma, Ram Lakhan. At one point in the mid-80s, Shroff was rated more popular than many of his contemporaries.
After a string of average grossers through 1985–86, Jackie gave a resounding performance in the 1987 Mahesh Bhatt film Kaash alongside Dimple Kapadia. In the movie, Shroff adeptly played the character of a popular superstar who after several professional failures loses his wealth, turns alcoholic and gets estranged from his wife. They finally reconcile but lose their only son to brain cancer. This role was a welcome change from his earlier characters of a tough cop or unemployed youth turned hoodlum. Although the film did not fare well commercially, Shroff's acting abilities were appreciated by the critics and the public.
Subsequently, Shroff restated solid performances in Ram Lakhan, Tridev, Parinda (1989), Angaar (1992), Gardish (1993), Aaina (1993), Border (1997), Lajja (2001) and Devdas (2002) to name a few.
Shroff continues to work in Subhash Ghai movies. Since 2000 or thereabouts, he has appeared in mainly character roles. He often speaks to the media in "Mumbaiyya Hindi".[3]
